Money Math Guide

Happy Summer!!!

Ms. Garrow has been taking some time off to read (strange - you'd think she'd be solving math problems in all her free time this summer)

I received an email today from someone who found this blog and they shared another MONEY resource. What a great addition and just the thing I've been looking to find for students!
There are games and activities for all elementary grades and some themed activities too!

Money is a significant focus in 2nd Grade and is touched upon in 3rd grade
Be sure to check this resource out this summer to keep your $$$ (money) skills sharp!

THANK YOU, HANNAH!!

Math at Our House

New Zealand is working to shift their students to remote learning. They have shared a page of ideas of how to incorporate math at home. Not all the suggestions correlate to COVID-19 restrictions (ie. traveling, going to the library) but there are some great ideas. Check it out!

Science? I Thought This Was a Math Blog?

Hello!!

I've been finding so many great science resources in my search for math resources.
I couldn't let this knowledge slip through my fingers!

While I don't teach science at Samuel Morey or Westshire, I have taught science at the Montshire for two summers! I wanted to share these resources with you in some way so I can stop flooding the teachers emails 😊

Check out my tab "Science" for some AWESOME at-home science resources. Many science museums, magazines, NASA, NWS, are sharing their incredible science knowledge with us at home for FREE.

Math and Literacy are really taking the forefront right now but sometimes it is nice to learn something new - lots of our kids love to learn about science!!

Becoming a Math Family

This website was created by math learning experts at the University of Chicago and other universities across the country.

This is a site suggested by the Everyday Mathematics program that our district uses K-6 (with the exception of 1st grade)

It is geared toward families with children ages 3-6. Might be fun for some of our Kindergarten and First graders with younger siblings to try out!

They even have an app!

2/3/4 Virtual Subtraction Game

Here is a pilot of a game played in third and fourth grade that I made "virtual"

Make a Difference

Let me know what you think! I would love to hear your feedback!
I call it a pilot (maybe I should say beta) because there may be some more kinks to work out before it is completely user friendly.

Option: Ask a teacher or classmate to play with you on Google Slides - Share your copy of the game with them and set up a time to play together!

I call it a pilot (maybe I should say beta) because there may be some more kinks to work out before it is completely user friendly.

Option: Your teachers, Mr. Stevenson, Ms. Lloyd, Ms. Garrow, and Mrs. McGowan are available to play with you!! Just let us know when and we can make a copy of the game for you :)

Cards

There are so many ways to use a deck of cards to practice math!

Here are directions for 10 different games that can be played with a standard deck of cards.
Mr. P shared this for his Westshire 2nd graders from the Newark Schools.

Mr. M (Behavior Specialist at Samuel Morey) created this video for playing 10's Go-Fish.
This is a popular game in our small group lessons and in both 1st grade classrooms!

DIY Kinesthetic 10-Frame

10-frame 10 partners

While this might be geared more toward late Kindergarten, I have begun using this manipulative with the 1st graders that I support in small groups.

I completed the set up and took pictures in less than 5 minutes. It's that easy!

Step 1. Start with a regular egg carton.

Step 2/3. Cut the top off and cut off two "egg holders".
Here is where we see the "10 frame" come alive!

Step 4. Fill with any counter you'd like. I used pennies and marshmallows. You could use toys, marbles, anything that would fit in the spaces.

Step 5. I drew a 10-frame to hold the counters not in my egg carton. As you can see, there are 7 pennies in the egg carton 10-frame and 3 pennies in the other 10-frame. You can make the connection that 7 and 3 must go together to make ten.
Take it one step further - Write the equation 7+3=10.

Step 6. Make other combinations of 10.
You can start with a different number in your set as well if you've exhausted 10 partners!
